Paul P. Harris Plaque

Racine Rotary Paul Harris Plaque

This Paul P. Harris Plaque was dedicated on November 9th, 1923 to honor Paul P Harris as the Founder of Rotary. Soon this plaque will be 100 years old!

The people present in 1923 at the dedication were:
Racine Club President, Frank Miller
Club Secretary Chisley Perry
Guy Gundaker, President of Rotary International
and the Governors of R.I. Districts 10 and 40.

Paul Harris was, of course, invited to be present. In a letter he stated his reasons for believing it best not to attend, saying “my visits to clubs are confined to instances where there is work to be done.” So he was not present for this dedication, however Paul Harris did come to Racine two times. Once on October 13, 1924 for the 13th district conference and the other on April 28, 1927.

The reason why the Rock is in Racine's Island Park?
In the 1920’s Island Park was the place to be seen on a Sunday afternoon. It was a great place to picnic and play. Also, at that time, the Racine Zoo was located on the Island. So the next time you visit Island Park, be sure to check this out!
